Two 41⁄2 in. dia. main rams and two 5 in. dia. scoop rams operate the forward-mounted side arms of the 42H.B. A Fordson 96 h.p.
six- cylinder diesel with power-shift trans- mission gives two forward and two reverse speeds. On the 42H.B, heavy- duty disc brakes and a Centrax plane- tary drive axle are fitted as standard.
Lifting capacity of this machine is 14,000 lb., and its payload is 4,500 lb.

WELDING
Variable Air-Gap Control Improves Performance
A RANGE of a.c. arc-welding sets, employing the variable air-gap prin- ciple of control, has been introduced by Max Arc, Ltd., Walton-on- Thames, Surrey, U.K.
Advantages claimed for this sys- tem are a high concentration of power in the arc, with low power losses.
Max Arc welding set
maximum arc stability, and a fine de- gree of control, plus a saving in mains power and materials.
The range covers models with max- imum outputs from 125 to 600 amp. A simple handwheel control varies the air-gap between the faces of the trans- former core, and provides infinitely variable output throughout the range, without change-over links, etc.
Meters are dispensed with, since the equipment can be accurately calibrat- ed to give the required current. The new sets are said to make welding faster and to give stronger welds with an improved finish.

GENERATOR
Portable Assembly for Driving Hand Tools
A lightweight diesel powered gen- erator, the 1750 Diesel Minigen, an- nounced by E. P. Aliam & Co. Ltd. 132 Sloane Street, London, S.W,1, weighs only 180 lb. and is suitable for supplying heating and lighting
1750 Diesel Minigen generator facilities or driving a wide range of power tools.

The Diesel Minigen is powered by Petters AA.1 lightweight 3.000 r.p.m. engine and will run for hours on 4 gallon of fuel. A safe- ty feature allows the output to be short-circuited without damaging the unit. Shorting will collapse the field. but on removal of the short the set will regenerate to full capacity eliminating the need for circuit break- ers or fuses.
The generator is supplied housed in an aluminium case and with two socket outlets. Voltage outputs can be wound for either 230/115 V or 110/55 V.

DUMP TRUCK
45 Ton Model is Largest
in IH Line
POWER for a new 45 ton capacity off-highway hauler now being produc- ed by International Harvester Co..
IK 180 Payhauler
180 North Michigan Avenue, Chi- cago, Ill., USA, is provided by a 12 cylinder, 475 h.p. diesel engine. The vehicle is the largest in the IH line.
This 180 Payhauler is only 12 ft. high. The square body is of 100,000 p.s.i. steel and has a 35 cu. yd. heaped capacity.
The variable section I-beam frame is of high strength, low allow steel. and heavy duty leaf springs are fitted, with military tank suspension type shock absorbers at each wheel.
Power steering is standard and power shift transmission gives nine forward speeds. Top forward speed. is 34 m.p.h.
Two three-stage hydraulic cylinders mounted outboard of the frame raise
the dump body 70 degrees in 13 seconds. Raising the body exposes the engine, converter and transmis- sion for easy servicing.

PUMP
Lightweigt Lift and Force Diesel Model
THE Viscolift 3in. diaphragm pump made by Goodenough Pumps. Ltd.,
London, 112 Jermyn Street, S.W., is claimed to be the lightest weight pump of its type and capacity.
Viscolift 3in. pump
It is said to be capable of pumping thick mud and sludge at outputs up to 4,000 gallons an hour and up to 60 ft. in height.
The pump drive is taken through an oil immersed worm gearbox con- nected through ball bearings to the diaphragm connecting rod.
Aluminium alloy is used for the pump body, with cast-in bronze branches. A balancing chamber is fitted to reduce the amount of vibra- tion transmitted to the hoses by the lift and force action.
Although mounted as standard on a two-wheel rubber tyred trolley, the Viscolift can be arranged on a high- speed towing trailer or welded steel skid base. Petrol engines or electric motors may be fitted as alternatives to the usual diesel engine drive.
Agents include: Swire and Mac- Laine, Ltd., Hong Kong, and Guthrie and Co. (Singapore) Ltd.
