section of Parliament House the large block which includes on the ground floor a number of Ministerial suites, committee rooms and rooms for the use of members.
The entrance to the main building is imposing, with its marble lined ves- tibule, leading in from the steps rising from Parliament grounds. Inset in one of the window panes of the cor- ridor is a mounted section of stained glass recovered from the British House of Commons' Chamber, which was destroyed by an incendiary bomb on May 10, 1941.
The Chamber of the House, in this building. is traditionally British in layout. The former Legislative Coun- cil Chamber, no longer required for its original purpose, as New Zealand's Parliament is now unicameral, is al- ways used for the opening of Parlia- ment ceremony. This main block has been over-crowded for many years.
The third section of Parliament Buildings is the library wing. This was erected in 1900 and now houses the General assembly library, as well as providing committee rooms for the use of private members and for the
leader of the opposition and his staff. In 1953 the entire roof was renewed and many of the gables removed as a precaution against earthquakes.
A new building for Parliamentary purposes is long overdue and the de- cision to proceed with this, has been well received, particularly by those who are at present working under dif- the ficulties in certain sections of older buildings. With the building of "the beehive" many problems will be solved, and Parliament Hill will acquire a very distinctive combination of buildings in a rapidly growing area.
