Bids for Melbourne Bridge Contract

CONTRACTORS and consortia from about 30 countries are now preparing bids for the construction of the A$42,- 513,600 bridge over the Lower Yarra River at Mel- bourne, Australia. The tenders are due to be returned on January 30, 1968.

The

The project is divided into three contracts. first will be for foundation work which involves construc- tion of 32 concrete piers on which the 8.500 ft. long eight-lane structure will rest.

The second contract will cover the 4-mile-long con- crete approaches on either side of the main span, and the third part of the project will be erection of the central suspended steel span.

When complete the bridge will be 116 ft. wide and the deck will be 190 ft. above the water level of the river at its highest point. The bridge is part of the 51⁄2- mile Lower Yarra Crossing scheme. Joint consulting_en- gineers are Maunsell and Partners and Freeman, Fox and Partners, both of London.

London Cinema "Floats" on Rubber Pads

THE 4,500-ton steel and concrete structure of the audi- torium of London's newest cinema, the Odeon at Marble

Arch, has been "floated" on 72 specially designed reinforced synthetic rubber pads each only two inches thick to sound-proof it against the clatter of under- ground trains and the rumble of city traffic.

J

The cinema was the first major building to incor- porate this type of suspension. The pads together total- ling 80 sq. feet in area, are set at intervals between the piled foundation and the main walls, each pad carrying a load of 1,000 lb. per square inch.

James Walker & Co. of Woking, Surrey, conduct- ed extensive tests both in their own laboratories and at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, before perfecting the material of which the pads are made. Specimens were tested under a 24-ton block of concrete to simulate working conditions. Checks were carried out for deflection, creep and the effects of temperature and humidity before work could commence on the building of the cinema. Tests have shown the material to be virtually fireproof and to have an inde- finate life under loads very much greater than those im- posed by the design of the new cinema.

T.P. Bennett and Sons were the architects for the building.
