Contemporary Japanese Architecture

by Noboru Kawayoe. 61⁄2 in x 911⁄2 in. 75 pages. Published by the Society for International Cul- tural Relations Tokyo 1965. 31 photographs.

This volume, the tenth in a series of books on Japanese life and culture, has been written by a distinguished critic who, by following the various lineages of architectural development in both East and West, has indicated how and where various elements are combined in modern Japanese archi- tecture.

The most interesting chapter is that relating to the influence of Western culture on modern Japanese architec-

ture.

The first European-style buildings were planned by western architects and the most famous of them is listed as being Josiah Conder, an English- man, who went to Japan in 1877. Under Conder's teaching, as the first professor of architecture at the Tokyo Technical College (now the Architec- tural Dept. of the University) the first four students graduated in 1879 and within ten years the design of western- style buildings passed into the hands of the Japanese themselves, as did the teaching.

The chapter goes on to relate the

dilemma caused by the various move- ments and individuals influencing the Japanese architectural scene. Apart from the Modern Movement itself and the introduction of concrete, there were influential Government archi- tects, academicism and the search for a national style of architecture and earthquake proof design. The chap- ter is all too short in trying to chart the erratic movements of a developing style.

Even within the last decade Japan- ese architectural criticism is a strong influencing factor, and well known ar- chitects are constantly called upon to defend their works by argument.

An interesting attitude to fair face concrete is given by Tange in which he mentions, “As old carpenters work- ed on wood with great joy, the con- struction workers who prepare the frames (formwork) or actually do the work of concreting show great pas- sion in their works." Nowadays it is getting hard enough to find the 'old carpenters' even.

Concrete Block Walls.

Concrete Association. A4 size. 7s. 6d.

Now in its fourth edition, this book- let was first published in 1949 and has been revised considerably,

Far East Architect & Builder November, 1966

Intended primarily for architects and builders as a guide to the wide range of concrete blocks available for use in the construction of load-bear- ing and partition walls, it also des- cribes techniques of block wall con- struction and the design considera- tions involved.

Divided into two parts the booklet first deals with Common Blockwork which it describes as those types of blocks intended to receive an applied finish. The part on Facing Blockwork deals with coloured blocks (including glazed colours), those with moulded textures and exposed aggregate and the 'pierced' blocks so familiar in the tropics. Mention is also made of split blocks, a type of which was used on the Congress Theatre at East- bourne.

Nine tables at the end of the book- let provide information on the proper- ties and characteristics of the blocks. That on Fire Resistance is new and comprehensive whilst others, some- times without the units stated are borrowed from B. Standards or C. of P. Mention is also made of a prac- tice of adding sand to cement based paints to increase 'body' and to pro- vide texture.
