CONCRETE TESTING

Oil Filled Case Protects Temperature Controller

AN ENVIRONMENTAL temperature controller, capable of maintaining the temperature of any medium or ob- ject within a range of 30 to 120 deg. F.. is housed in an oil-filled plastic case for installation in locations where a polluted atmosphere could damage the unprotected electrical equipment.

This model is useful for controlling the curing temperature of concrete samples taken on a building site, cur- ed under fixed conditions and later tested to estimate the structural strength attained in situ by the con-

crete.

Once the electrical connections on the controller have been made-off and the printed circuit panel fully lowered into the container, electrically-insulat- ing oil is added until it covers the terminal block and all bare wires. The

be adjusted with screwdriver while immersed in the oil bath, and their position clearly read through the oil and the trans- parent plastic end cap.

In use, a tran- sistorised flip-flop circuit detects the bridge operating balance and ener- gises a power re- lay capable of positively switching 10 amp. at 240 v. a.c., no matter how slowly the detected temperature may change. One or more temperature detectors. also housed in plastic cases or, for higher temperature, metal bodies, of- fer a sensitivity of ± 1 deg. F. Dia- meter of the vertically-mounted con- tainer is 41⁄2 in. and its length 12 in.

PLASTERING MACHINE

Pump Sprays Mortars at 40 cu. ft. per hour

ALL normal sand/lime or sand/- cement mortars can be pumped and sprayed from the Coolie plastering machine at a rate of 40 cu. ft. per- hour enough to cover 750-850 sq. ft. with a 1⁄2 in. layer. The machine's uniform pressure and delivery at the gun ensure even distribution and good mortar adhesion.

Power for the Coolie is supplied by a diesel or petrol engine or by an electric motor. In all cases pumping and spraying can be stopped or started immediately from the gun by operating either an air cock, which causes the petrol or diesel engine to idle or run up to speed, or, in the case of the electric version, an on-off switch which controls the motor.

Coolie plastering machine Under normal site conditions, with a rubber mortar line, the pump will lift mortar up to 7 ft. or transport it a distance of 133 ft., depending on the height.

A grained surface on both sides en- sures good adhesion for the mortar.

The flexibility of Hyload at low temperatures was proved by rolling it around a lin. diameter mandrel at 20 degrees F. without fracturing. This flexibility was maintained for 30 days at freezing point. The dampcourse may be cut by trowel and laid in the traditional manner, with 4in. laps. Joints can be easily welded.

Guthrie and Co., Ltd. of Singa- pore, Kuala Lumpur, Jesselton and Kuching, are the agents for Ruberoid.

COPPER TUBING Thin Walled, Hard Temper Material

AFTER two years experimental work, Yorkshire Imperial Metals. Ltd., P. O. Box 166, Leeds, U.K. have produced a hard temper, thin wall copper tube with outside dia- meters to British Standard 659 sizes.

The tubing, YTW, is now available in 1⁄2 in., 4 in. and 1 in. nominal bore sizes. It is exported in 20 ft. lengths, being despatched in bundles of 10 lengths with the ends protected.

YTW is approximately half the weight and two thirds the price of BS tube. It cannot be bent and fit- tings must be used for changes of direction. Part of the savings in cost is lost by the need for additional fit- tings, but these are now marketed at reduced prices to offset this disad- vantage.

In Hong Kong, Yorkshire Imperial Metals, Ltd. are represented by Im- perial Chemical Industries (China)

inert fibres are used in a new dampcourse known as Hyload which has been developed by The Ruberoid Co., Ltd., 1-19 New Oxford Street, Lon- don, W.C.1, in conjunction with the Coal Products Division of the National Coal Board.

It is said to have a resistance to lateral loading superior to that of dampcourses employing copper, bitu- nien or slate.

When tested in piers and loaded to failure, it successfully withstood a compression of 190 tons per sq. ft.

AUSTRALIAN company, Trafalgar Products Australasia, Ltd., 62 Swan- son Street, Melbourne, Victoria, has designed a toilet cistern which can be sealed in brick or timber walls. It is only 334 in. wide.

Suitable for installation in tropical areas, the 3 gallon tank is made of 24 gauge copper. It is silent in operation.

The cistern can be mounted at the rear of any type of pan, offset on either side, or set in an adjoining wall. The front cover plate is fixed

to the tank frame by pivot lugs at the bottom and by the collar of the push-button. It may be faced with matching ceramic tiles or covered with any suitable material, such as the mirror, wall board or stainless steel.

An alternative to the hinged cover plate is provided by a rear access tank with a fixed front. This is more suitable for the older type of property where the toilet is at the side of the building.

The makers have not yet appointed agents in S.E. Asia.
