NEW CONTRACTORS'
PIPELAYER
Improved Ability to Work in Deep Mud
FIFTY per cent. greater ground clearance is given on the newly de- signed 561B pipelayer by Cater- pillar Tractor Co., Peoria, Ill., USA.
A total of 15% in. between the face of the track shoes and the un- derside of the pipelayer improves the ability of the 561B to work in deep mud and manoeuvre over stumps and boulders.
Two basic changes in the design of the 561B result in this increased clearance: the diagonal braces on the track roller frame have been replaced by mountings that bolt directly to the bevel gear case, as is done on the larger Cat 583 and 572 pipelayers; and the master clutch housing has been replaced by a more compact

either side of centre. Its 14 ft. 8 in. turning radius (outside tyres) allows the machine to be used efficiently in stock piling and material handling applications.
Power steering and power brakes are coupled with a single lever speed and direction control. Static tipping load is 12,000 lb. With a variety of buckets ranging from 11⁄2 to 21⁄2 cu. yd., the machine will easily handle its S.A.E. operating capacity of 6,000 lb.
The transmission is a full power shift with two speeds forward and one reverse. With the use of a twin turbine torque converter, the trans- mission becomes. in effect, a four speed forward and а two speed
reverse.
For example, the first turbine and its output gear provide the high tor- que output (5.1:1 at full stall) neces- sary for crowding the pile and get- ting the load underway. The second turbine and its gear set provide more speed with less torque for travelling. The transition from crowd to travel is automatic. In actual operation, the operator need only shift from forward to reverse (or vice versa) to perform within the work characteris- tics of this vehicle.

arate, independent power trains for each machine function: power hy- draulic controls with two-shoe clut- ches: tubular steel boom of a patent- ed tetrahedronal design: independent boom hoist: cable drum with a capa- city of 1,008 ft.: and 10 second hydraulic counterweight lowering,
Among the optional equipment are power load lowering clutches on either or both main drums; two-speed drums with hoist line speeds up to 456 ft. a minute or power lowering available as 105 ft. per minute: and independent third drum with 26,700 lb. line pull.
Boom extensions are in lengths of 10, 15, 20 and 30 ft. They are all pin connected for fast assembly. The special four axle carrier has 20- speed transmission and hydraulic out- riggers.
