(c) The excavation of some 27 million cu. yds. of earth from the hills at Siglap Plain and the Katong Catch- ment Area by four modern bucket- wheel excavators.
(d) The conveyance of this earth from the hills to any points along the coast by some 61⁄21⁄2 miles of belt con-
veyors;
(e) The continuous and proper me- thod of depositing this earth into the sea by one specially-designed spreader in conjunction with one tripping ma- chine running along the shiftable dump conveyor;
(f) The continuous and efficient compaction of soil by bulldozers, grad- ers and rubber tyred rollers;
(g) The orderly follow up of the construction of shore protection works and 51⁄2 miles of canals and drains to carry surface water across the reclam- ation area to the sea.
The method adopted by the Jap- anese contractor was essentially the original one proposed by the Housing & Development Board.
By the end of June 1969, 930 acres of land had already been reclaim- ed along 41⁄2 miles of coastline with an average speed of one acre per day.
