tors had to be considered. These in- cluded the development use of the land with the local authority, a market survey of the area in which the site is located, three sets of building by- laws in force in Lahore, user require- ment studies and financial plans and cost benefit analyses.
From the above findings, a building with a total floor area of 150,000 sq. ft. and a total height not exceeding 120 ft. was developed.
Since the site slopes gently down from Queen's Road, a one way ser- vice road is planned along the north- ern edge of the site. This road will provide off street access to the car park entrance, and to the main en- trance of the building. Pedestrian access for shoppers will be direct from Queen's Road.
The entire building is designed on a 40 in. horizontal and vertical grid. Windows are of the minimum size permitted under the by-laws and deeply recessed.
The structure of the building con- sists of a reinforced concrete frame with ribbed slabs and is supported on reinforced concrete raft foundations. Facades are formed in textured pre- cast concrete elements, including win- dow frames.
Construction work is about to be- gin on the building which will cost about US$1,999,000.
