ft., will contain the company's office, public conveniences, attendant facili- ties, cold stores, stores, plant for A/C and workshop.

The first floor of the lower block, with a total floor area of 7,530 sq. ft., will contain a supermarket, coffee bar, bank and lavatories. Above this there will be a roof garden and lookout. The lookout will be enclosed as a protection from bad weather, as is the upper roof lookout. The tower block contains three floors. The first, with a floor area of 4,210 sq. ft., has a rest- aurant, kitchen and lavatories. A mez- zanine contains a kitchen with a floor area of 2,420 sq. ft., and the upper floor is taken up by a restaurant, bar, dance floor and lavatories. The upper floor has a total floor area of 5,380 ft.

One of the unusual features of this building is that it offers maximum roof area at different levels, thus pro- viding plenty of space for lookouts. Externally, the building will be faced with white glass mosaic except for the shafts and folded slab walls which will be in fair faced concrete to give a desirable contrast.

Problems

One of the main problems that rose during the planning stage was the movement of people from one place to another. This was solved by esca- lators, serving the first floor, thus leaving the two lifts which will be housed inside the pillars that support the restaurant tower, to service the roof garden, two restaurant floors and upper roof lookout. The latter are 90 ft. above ground level and 1,400 ft. above sea level respectively.

The structural engineers are, how- ever, faced with two difficult problems

-

the foundations and the cantilevered tower. As the main load of the build- ing is transmitted onto two cores, caisson foundations are being employ- ed. These foundations may have to go down as deep as 120 feet through decomposed volcanic rock to reach the solid granite beneath. Prestressed beams and slabs are to be used on the tower structure and the floor structure thickness is to be kept to a minimum so that the tower will not appear too bulky.

As construction work has not yet commenced, no doubt other problems will arise, but most of these will be of a structural nature.

Construction on the new terminal will start in October this year and it is expected to be finished in 15 months. The total cost of this whole project is estimated at HK$3,000,000.
