CHINESE traditional architecture is imaginatively reflected in the ultra- modern design of a new upper tram terminal complex to be built on the top of Hong Kong's Victoria Peak by the Peak Tramways Co. Ltd.

Viewed from a distance, the com plex will look somewhat like an ancient walled city of China or a floating boat. Thus, the terminal should not only be a new attraction to tourists and local people, but also be representational and symbolic.

The new terminal will be located on a steeply sloping site of approxi- mately 8,000 sq. ft. sandwiched in be- tween the existing Victoria Apartments and the lookout shelter, with the 'Cable House' or 'Engine Room' as its back. There is a drop of 60 ft. within the site depth of 65 ft. So, the gradient is practically I in 1 or 45 degrees.

Difficult site

This difficult site is compensated for not only by its strategic position, which offers a breathtaking view of the harbour, but also by the fact that it is in between two peaks as far as landscaping is concerned.
