The project, not expected to begin for at least another year, will house about 100,000 people. Land clearance has begun, and acquisition of a few hundred acres is expected to be finished by next year. The natural feature of the area, a ridge running through the centre, is to be preserved.

Development of this third satellite town in Singa- pore is important to current thinking of a linear con- cept of development or concentrated development along the whole southern coastline of the island. Such a town will act as a "buffer" between the commercial centre of the city and the manufacturing centre of Jurong.
Biggest housing estate to be built in Kwai Chung
HONG KONG's biggest housing estate, capable of accommodating some 81,000 people, will be erected on a 48-acre site on the Texico Peninsula in Kwai Chung in the New Territories.
Known as the Kwai Shing Government low cost housing estate, it will cost some HK$70 to HK$80 million and is expected to be completed by 1974.
The estate will consist of 20 multi-storey blocks, eight estate schools with a total of 192 classrooms for primary and kindergarten, as well as shops, vegetable markets, playgrounds and carparks. Since the buildings will be built on different levels because of the difficult nature of the site, the estate will be constructed in three stages.
The first phase of the project involving the construction of one seven-storey and three 20-storey blocks, one 24-classroom estate school and three vegetable markets is estimated to cost HK$8 million and is expected to be complete by April, 1971.

Licencing agreement for UK tunnel system
A NEW method of tunnel construction developed in Britain will soon be available in Singapore and Malaysia.
This was announced by Mr. R.J. McBean, manag- ing director of Kinnear Moodie (Concrete) Ltd., who was recently in Singapore for talks with Hume Indus- tries (Far East) Ltd. who have a licence agreement to manufacture Kinnear Moodie products locally.
Mr. McBean said that the new method of con- struction in which the tunnel is lined with precast con- crete segments should be well accepted in Singapore and Malaysia because in both territories they would be using local materials and labour.
Car park under cathedral
PLANS are in an advanced stage for the construc- tion of an underground car park in St. Andrew's Cathedral Singapore, with underground crossings at North Bridge Road, Coleman Street and St. Andrew's Road.
The project will call for considerable skill in ex- cavation and construction so that foundations of none of the buildings in the area, especially the cathedral will be affected. The Public Works Department has invited contractors in civil engineering above the S$750,000 class to submit tenders for the work.
