Post-tensioning of high tensile wires to connect the roof girder to the column
Stressing of the two remaining cables was done on site after rigidly connect- ing the roof girder to the column. In the case of the column, all eight post- tensioning cables were stressed on site immediately after positioning the roof girder.
Construction system
The proposed construction pro- gramme was subject to detailed study
and a CPM network was prepared to define clearly the programme of activi- ties on site. A scale model of the struc- ture was also built as an aid in tackling construction problems and arranging the heavy equipment manoeuvres.
used to place the smaller units and two heavy cranes, one of 45 tons and one of 60 tons capacity, erected the larger elements such as the 26-ton columns.
A new technique was used in joint- ing the roof girder to the supporting column. The two members were face- matched at the joint and the rigidity necessary to resist the large external bending moment was supplied by post- tensioning eight vertical cables in the column. A construction key was pro- vided to facilitate matching the faces of the two members during erection.
Positioning the 17-ton roof girder was made relatively easy by a system of timber struts and scaffolding that supported the tip. A unit was lifted from the delivery trailer to the top of the column, using the 60-ton crane positioned near the supporting column and the 45-ton crane near the girder tip.
As soon as the joint between the column and roof girder was face- matched, post-tensioning cables were inserted into the end anchorages of the roof girder down into the column and were anchored at the dead-end an-
The result of this detailed planning was that all 3,600 metric tons of com-chorage assembly located near the ponents were erected within the sche- duled duration of two months.
Two lightweight mobile cranes were
bottom of the column. This was the first use of such a jointing system in the Philippines.
