School building costs in Hong Kong

THE Triennial Survey of the Hong Kong Educa- tion Department, just published, reveals that during the three-year period from 1964 to 1967. six grant school buildings or extensions and major repairs to existing buildings were completed involving total build- ing grants of over HK$1,788,000.

During the same period, 232 new subsidized school buildings and extensions were constructed and essential repairs to existing buildings carried out with the aid of building subsidies amounting to over HK- $20.210,000.

Building grants were also paid to meet part of the cost of private non-profit-making school buildings. Since 1965-66, building grants amounting to HK$3.314.502 have been paid to eight private non-pro- fit-making schools. For the year 1967-68, $22,005,- 000 has been provided for 150 new aided school building projects.

250-Bed city hospital planned in Taipei

TAIPEI City Health Bureau is planning to build a 250-bed modern emergency hospital to be run in co- operation with the Taiwan University Hospital. It will be an eight-storey building costing more than NT$30 million (US$750,000) to construct. Sited at Kungyuan Road just behind the Taita Hospital, the new hospital will have a total floor space of 1.152,000 sq. ft. (14,400 sq. ft. on each floor).

Building plans approved

THE Building Authority approved a total of 26 new building plans of all types in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories in June. Statistics released by the Building Authority show that in the same perod, 37 completed buildings were certified for occupation as compared with 47 in the preceding month.

Of the new buildings, one was for domestic pur- poses, 21 for non-domestic purposes, and 15 for com- bined domestic and non-domestic use. Altogether eight buildings were under complete demolition in June.

Gammon awarded M$20m contract

GAMMON (Southeast Asia) Ltd. has been awarded a M$20 million road-building contract in Brunei's re- mote Temburong district.

This is the second big Brunei Government award for Gammon. Recently, they won a port dredging contract for M$12 million.

The Temburong road building scheme is part of a M$46 million rural road programme by the Govern-

ment.

Housing for RP government staff

A P50-million low cost housing project for Philip- pine government employees has been studied and found acceptable by the board of trustees of the Government Service Insurance System.

To be undertaken by the Land and Housing De- velopment Corp., the project is situated in Novaliches, 20 kilometres north of Manila. The firm's initial target for the first year is 2,000 housing units to be con- structed on a 100-hectare site.
