New technical institute planned by HK Government

HONG KONG Government is to build a technical training institute on a site next to the Victoria Techni- cal School in Morrison Hill. The site has already been prepared and foundation work is about to start.

When completed towards the end of 1969, the Technical Institute will take over from the Technical College the pre-apprenticeship and other low level courses to enable the college to concentrate on the training of technologists and high level technicians.

Construction cost of the institute is estimated at about HK$4 million. This has been met by a dona- tion from the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club.

The institute will comprise a six-storey building with a central block and two wings and a two-storey low block. The winged block will have 21 workshops. 16 classrooms, five laboratories, a visual aid and cinema, a library and administration and staff accom- modation. The upper floor of the low block will be used as an assembly hall while covered recreational facilities and a canteen will be provided on the ground

floor.

Standard signboard for SIA

SINGAPORE Institute of Architects has recommend- ed the use of a standard signboard by all members of the SIA on building sites. The board is 10 in. wide by 30 in. long and is to be used preceding the name of the architectural firm in charge

of the building contract.

Similar size boards can be placed below the standard sign- board to denote the consulting engineer and quantity surveyor for the job.

Expo '70 symbol

A SYMBOL has been designed for the Hong Kong pavilion at Expo '70. To be used on all printed ma- terial, it represents in a stylized form the batwing sails which feature so prominently on the pavilion.

The symbol is designed by Bernard Navotta, who is the chief designer to the Trade Development Council and a member of the design team working on the Hong

Kong Pavilion. In addition to designing the symbol, Mr. Navotta is responsible for all the graphics used in the pavilion and is also designing the Industrial Section of the interior of the main building.

In its full form the symbol is in three colours, green, blue and grey with black lettering. The blue represents the sea and the green, the hills of the New Territories. Both colours overlap and encircle the "Pearl of the Orient" which is Hong Kong.
