Lai Chi Kok bridge nearing completion

Two of Hong Kong's most ambitious road pro- jects are nearing completion and will be open for public use later this year. They are the Lai Chi Kok Bridge, the longest to be built so far in the Colony, and the two-mile-long new coastal road which winds along the fringe of the Lai Chi Kok peninsula.

The new bridge and road, on completion, will provide a new route linking the southern part of the Kowloon Peninsula with the New Territories. This is part of a long-term plan to provide a new alternative route to the New Territories where new satellite towns

are being developed at Kwai Chung, Tsuen Wan and Castle Peak.

The 2,600 ft. bridge will carry two 33 ft.-wide carriageways providing three traffic lanes in each direc- tion and will have a central divider. In addition, there will also be 9 ft.-wide pavements for pedestrians, one on each side of the bridge.
