A very delightful residence has recently been completed on the upper part of Deepwater Bay Road, near to its junction with Repulse Bay Road, for Mr. Wm. Paterson, the Managing Director of A. S. Watson & Co., Ltd. The architects for the building are Messrs. Spence, Robinson & Partners, who are comparatively newcomers to the Colony, and they deserve a great deal of credit in that, this being the first of their private house plans, they have succeeded in incorporating
several picturesque touches into the design which gives an air of originality to the building and yet which harmonises so well with the immediate surroundings. Additional credit must be given for the fact that the architects were working to a definite fixed budget, in which had to be included a con- siderable amount of site formation and road approach work.
The site commands magnificent views over the Deepwater Bay area, but the formation necessitated much arduous cutting of steep and extremely hard rock,
The steep limited area required a considerable amount of retaining walls, but these were so proportioned and placed as to render them as inconspicuous as possible. The terracing behind the house also assisted in reducing the usual unsight- liness of the necessary cutting.
Every effort was made in the planning to give all rooms the benefit of the unusually fine outlook.
The house itself, although not a large one, has been designed with the very minimum of hall, stairway and corridor area, leaving the maximum amount of floor space for the main rooms.
The main part of the ground floor is devoted to the dining-living room combination, the division between the two rooms being effected by a low built-in feature, which separates the functional requirements of the room without interfering with its proportioning. A delightful study, with an excellent fireplace in trimmed granite and built-in bookcases, is also provided on this floor.
