A typical interior of a tenement building, showing the congested conditions under which persons are compelled to live.
With this static exhibition as a background, a series of talks was given, commencing on the opening night with an address by Sir George Pepler, the title of which, "Your Home is the Root of Your Town", opened up the approach to planning on which the Exhibition was based.
The list of the full series of talks which is given below indicates the breadth of approach to the problems involved in producing homes for the people of this Colony.
Saturday, 6th January 1951: Your Honie is the Root of Your Town; by Sir George Pepler. C.B., Town Planning Consultant to the Government of Singapore. Monday, 8th January 1951: Your Home is More than a House; by A. C. Kayanan, Esq., Chief Planner to the Philippines. Member of U.N. Tropical Housing Com- mission.
Tuesday, 9th January 1951: Your Home and Your Neigh- bours; by R. Gardner-Medwin, Esq., Chief Architect, Department of Health for Scotland, Member of U.N. Tropical Housing Commission.
Wednesday, 10th January 1951; Your Home and Your Health; by The Hon. Dr. W. J. Vickers, C.B., Director of Medical Services, Singapore, and Dr. G. H. Lowe, Chief Health Officer, Singapore.
Thursday, 11th January 1951:
Your Home and Your Work; by Mr. A. D. Stutchbury, Acting Secretary for Economic Affairs, Singapore.
Friday, 12th January 1951: Your Home and Your Children; by The Hon. Mr. A. W. Frisby, Director of Education, Singapore.
Saturday, 13th January 1951: Your Home and Your Leisure Hours; by The Rev. R. K. S. Adams, Member of the Singapore Olympic and Sports Council. Monday, 15th January 1951: Your Home and Its Place in the Life of Singapore; by The Hon. Mr. W. L. Blythe, Acting Colonial Secretary, Singapore.
It was originally intended to close the Exhibition after the final address by the Acting Colonial Secretary, but public interest was such that the static exhibition remained open for a further week, and a "forum" was arranged for Friday, 19th January 1951, at which three ladies, Che Fatimah Binte Haji Haron, President, Women's Section of the Singapore Malaya Union, Che Zahrah Za'aba, Supervisor of the Women's Section of Radio Malaya's Malay Programmes, and Miss M. E. de Souza, a school-teacher, assisted by Mr. J. M. Fraser, Manager of the Singapore Improvement Trust, Mr. A. P. Rajah, Progressive Party member on the Municipal Commission, and Mr. Francis Thomas, former President of the Singapore Labour Party, offered to answer extempore any question on planning and housing put to them by members of the public.
It was of considerable interest that once again the audience consisted principally of members of the younger generation and their questions indicated that their appreciation of civic matters is deeper than that of many of the older generations.
After each of the talks there was an interval of quarter of an hour while the cinema screen was placed in position and
