NEW CHURCH

FOR

THE SEVENTH DAY

ADVENTISTS

View of the exterior of the Church.

The recent completion of a church for the Seventh Day Adventists on K.I.L. 6070, at the junction of Boundary and Fa Yuen Streets, adds another ecclesiastical structure to the many which grace the Colony of Hong Kong. Catering as it does to the spiritual, educational and social needs of a fairly large community, the building incorporates in its design the necessary facilities for the fulfilment of these functions.

The building is a two-storey structure with the main church hall or chapel on the upper floor. This chapel is

portion of this floor is devoted to the social room, which is designed to hold 200 persons but which can be reduced in size by means of folding doors. These folding doors when closed provide two additional rooms which could be used as classrooms or for other purposes.

The design of the building incorporates several interesting features. A rather modern form of the Gothic order has been used as the predominant style. This has been emphasized by the rigid framing in reinforced con- crete which has been designed as arch shaped combination

wall-columns and roof supports exposed in the interior of the chapel and projecting from the wall as part of the interior design.

The external finish of the building in natural granite blends in very well with the general spirit of the architec- tural order and serves a secondary, but very important purpose of assisting in the reduction of the construction costs. The principal effect is obtained by the natural finish of the granite ashlars contrasted with the smooth finish of the concrete surrounds to window and door openings and the framing of the roof parapets.

Mr. G. D. Su of the Hsin Yieh Architects designed the building, and it reflects great credit to his ability and experience that a building of this character and size could be completed for $250,000.00 and under $300,000.00 with all the installations and fittings included.
