THE problems of a steeply graded and limited site which faced the developers of the St. Joseph's College Primary School, Wanchai, Hong Kong (Far East Builder, December 1968) were repeat- ed on the adjoining site, where now stands the new Tang Shiu Kin Hospital.
The levels at the southern boundary, busy Queen's Road East, and the northern boundary, Salvation Army Street, differ by 27ft., ground level on one facade being lower sub-basement on the other.
To allow vehicles to enter from Queen's Road (ground level) would have aggravated traffic conditions in the area so the architect overcame both problems of site and traffic by placing the main pedestrian entry at the higher
level and confining ambulance and car approach to the rear of the hospital. A 12ft. wide roadway ramps up to lower ground floor, where the casualty and emergency department is situated.
The Tang Shiu Kin Hospital is a conventional reinforced concrete build- ing of six-storeys, housing a 38-bed casualty department, a 36-bed ward for expectant mothers and an out- patient department. It is I-shaped on plan, with circulation areas at each end

of the block emphasised by rounded towers. The total floor area is 40,517 sq. ft. and a typical floor covers 6,286 sq. ft.
Off-white shanghai plaster, with black dividing lines, is applied to the exterior and the entrances are marble clad. Internally the walls are lined with monotone glazed tiles. Public areas are floored in polished terrazzo and the wards in p.v.c. tiles.
