National Sports Stadium
Separate entrances have been pro- vided for guests, officials and partici- pants on the ground floor. Offices, meeting rooms, dining rooms, chang- ing rooms etc. are also on this level. The guests arrive under the grand stairs on to a lift lobby suspended over a pool with playing fountains. Three conference rooms-cum-banqueting hall also overlook this pool.
The practice track, sited adjacent to the stadium, is bordered with a high earth bank for the privacy of the par- ticipants. This track serving as an as- sembly point for opening and closing
ceremonies, is linked to the stadium the site, the stadium track has been by a tunnel.
From the lift lobby at ground floor, guests arrive at the VIP lounge. Some 360 seats for guests and a box of honour with 50 movable armchairs have been provided near the lounge which is served by a kitchenette.
The guest seats together with 3,000 others will be under cover. Boxes for radio and TV commentary, press rooms and photo finish are on this level over looking the finishing line. A public res- taurant is also provided on this level.
Because of the high water table of
raised 2ft. 6in. above ground level to ensure good drainage. The lowest seat tier is 7ft. 6in. above the track. Four concrete floodlight towers will illumin- ate the track one of which will serve also as a lookout tower.
The open stadium is the first pro- ject of the complex. Piling work is now in progress, to be followed shortly by construction of the covered stadium and swimming pool.
Funds for the development will be provided initially from proceeds from the Singapore Sweeps and Toto.
