more than 1,000 pupils, an assembly hall, library, art room, music room, science laboratories and playground.

The most economical layout was found to be an L-shaped building with staircases at the end of each arm and a main staircase at the join. Circulation is along outside corridors on the in- side face.

Since a feature is made of the as- sembly hall, this is built as a complete- ly separate form at the corner of the two main roads where it can be seen from afar. The school building is set back in the far corner and the ground floor space between provides road ac- cess and playground area. Further playground space is provided on the

roof of the school classroom block.

The assembly hall is a reinforced concrete portal frame structure, seat- ing 1,047 in the auditorium and bal- cony. Its structural form is undisguised and is in fact emphasised. The heavy cross beams of the eight portals span 50ft. and extend a further 5ft. bevond the external side walls of the hall to lay a design stress on the structural composition.

In the same way the balcony is emphasised by being cantilevered a clear 15ft. above the main entrance where a wide landing is approached by steps from both sides. The hall is un- obstructed by columns internally and is very well served by natural lighting.

Side windows extend the length of the auditorium up to balcony level, and above these are four ceiling-height win- dows on each side.

Cantilevered walkways are built along both sides of the hall which is raised to first floor level to allow covered car parking beneath. Flooring is mosaic tiling and the walls are finish- ed in lime plaster. Usable floor area of the hall is 6,280 sq.ft.

School building

The ground floor of the school building is also left open to give a covered play area. Classrooms are con- centrated in the long block of the L and science laboratories and activity
