LATEST to be completed of the numerous international-class hotels being constructed in Singapore is the Lion City a 168-room tower and podium structure situated mid-way between the city proper and Paya Lebar airport.

Like most modern hotels it incor- porates shopping arcades, but these are not merely curio shops for tourists. The suburb in which the hotel is locat- ed was poorly served for shops and it was a stipulation of the owners that the project should provide a complete shopping centre to cater for both tour- ist and local population needs.

The site covers an area of 2.24 acres at the intersection of two main high- ways, Tanjong Katong and Geylang Roads. The area is characterized by noise and heavy traffic so the architect planned for the tower block of bed- rooms to be set well back by introduc- ing a two-storey podium, comprising shops, restaurant/night club, milk-bar, shopping emporium and a bank, front- ing the main roads. A further arcade of shops, specifically for hotel guests, is included on the first floor of the tower block.

This allows the public easy access
