deplored conditions in Shanghai which resulted in a nett loss of more than one million Hongkong dollars for the period in question.

Property auctioned by Mr. Sousa consisted of Inland Lol 6315, together with the buildings thereon known as 126, Wing Lok Street and 15, Tung Loi Lane. The property is held from the Crown for the unexpired term of 999 years from December 26, 1871. The area is about 1,582 sq. ft. The bidding started at $100,000, and four interested parties among about 40 persons present kept it going with $2,000 jumps until it reached $162.000.

Lammert Bros. sold a quarter share in Inland Lot 2202, with building thereon known as 131, Des Voeux Road Central, to Mr. Chau Chung-to of 4. Stafford Road. Kowloon Tong, for $32,500. Bidding had started at $15,000.

30th September

In connection with the proposed establishment of an agricultural experimental station at Castle Peak, the Agricul- tural Department is calling for tenders for the building of an office and quarters there. Similar buildings have already been erected at Shatin. Taipo and other districts in the New Territories.

1st October

The transfer of the Cable & Wireless equipment from the Post Office Building to the new quarters in Electra House took place to-day. This transfer involves the moving of hundreds of sensitive instruments and other delicate equipment without interruption in the very busy cable traffic into and out of the Colony.

2nd October

The second of six proposed new Marine licensing offices was opened to-day near Public Pier. Public Square Street, Yaumati The third new station, at Aberdeen, is expected to be completed next week-end. New stations in order of completion. next year will be at Tai-0, Shaukiwan and Taipo Kau.

4th October

The Hongkong Young Women's Christian Association will formally inaugurate its Building Fund Campaign this afternoon at 3:30 in its Downtown Centre on Duddell Street. The Campaign has as its objective the raising of $700,000 to erect a Y.W.C.A. Building at the corner of Garden Road and MacDonnell Road. The Government has donated the site.

5th October

To meet the needs of modern aircraft and the operational requirements of the R.A.F. the main (northwest-southeast) runway of Kai Tak Airport is to be lengthened, it was announced. This necessitates the resumption of a piece of land to the North-west of Clear Water Bay Road about 165 yards wide and 176 yards in depth.

11th October

Two lots were put up for sale at De Sousa's auction rooms to-day. Lot 1 was a section of IL. 2862, together with a building thereon known as 151, Des Voeux Road W.. held on a long lease and the area about 840 sq. ft. Lot 2 was the remaining portion of I.L. 2862, together with a building thereon known as 149, Des Voeux Road W., also held on a long lease, and the area about 835 sq. ft. The upset price

for each lot was $20,000. Bidding was brisk. Lot No. 1 was sold to Mr. Ho Yui-piu, 196, Third Street, ground floor, for $42,000. Lot No. 2 went to Mr. Ting Yiu-tong, 203 Wing Lok Street, for $40,000.00

12th October

A revaluation of property in Hongkong, completed by March 30 this year, resulted in an increase of nearly $41,000,000 over the figure for April 1, 1949. states the Annual Report by the Commissioner, Rating and Valuation Department. "It is an all-time record increase in amount. This increase alone is greater than the whole rateable value of the Colony in 1938-1939," says Mr. J. Ring, the Commissioner. 13th October

The Admiralty have now given approval to start work on new modern building on a site provided by the Colonial Government at Mount Kellett and within a very short distance of the Royal Naval Hospital for the accommodation of the Matron and Nursing Sisters of the former War Memorial Hospital. The new building will provide comfortable accom- modation for the Matron, three Senior Sisters and 14 Nursing Sisters.

17th October

Offered for sale by order of the mortgagee, New Kowloon Inland Lot 2029, together with the buildings thereon known as 24, Nga Tsin Long Road, fetched $16,000 at Sousa's auction rooms. The upset price was $15,000. The buyer was Mr. Lee Mui-chi, 699. Nathan Road. About 30 persons were present at the sale.

21st October

A new model market is to be built by Government in the Kowloon City area towards the end of the year. With the main entrance fronting on Nga Tsin Wai Road, the buildings will be of one storey and occupy an area of approximately 13,000 square feet. There will be roads on all sides and the market will thus have ventilation all round. The roof will

be of asbestos sheeting on roof trusses supported on reinforced concrete columns.

23rd October

By order of the mortgagee. No. 87 Queen's Road East, was put up for auction by Messrs. Lammert Bros. The properties consists of Sub-section 5 of Section E of Inland Lot 199, together with the buildings thereon known as No. 87, Queen's Road East. It is held from the Crown under a 999 years' lease from 1843. The bidding opened at $20,000. At $28,000 the property was knocked down to Mrs. Ng Yuk-fong, of 27 Fuk Lo Tsun Road, Kowloon City.

24th October

About 20 people were present at Lammert Bros. Auction Room, when No. 9, College View (or 17, Hospital Road) was put up for sale, but there was no bidding. The area of the site is about 1,321 sq. ft.

30th October

The work at present proceeding in Queen's Road Central westward from its junction with Ice House Street in connection with raising of the level of Queen's Road is expected to occupy four months altogether, said the Hon. A. P. Weir, Acting Director of Public Works, at a Press conference, when the history of the scheme, the programme planned and the pro- gress made were discussed.
