August, and the new ferry passenger service was inaugurated on 1st September. Works carried out under Contract No. 49 of 1950 for the Shamshuipo Ferry included reinforced concrete roof extension, new booking offices, etc., 90% of which was completed.
The total quantity dredged by two dredging units at Proserpine Reef and Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter amounted to 52,245 cubic yards.
For reclamations, a total of 20,986 lorry loads were dumped by the public at the North Point Dump, while a total of 4,567 lorry loads were dumped at the Hung Hom Dump. Dredging and sandfilled foundations were completed for the Kun Tong and North Point Sea-walls; in the latter case, At the 62,000 cu. yds. of rubble were placed for the mound. Kun Tong Nullah, precasting of concrete blocks and the con- struction of nullah mouth completed, while 90% of the Nullah Invert and 70% of the Nullah Wall (A.P.C.) were completed. Hydrographic survey for Central Reclamation from H.M. Dock- yard to Queen's Buildings was completed; marine borings over this area are in progress, while the design of steel sheet piling wall and details are being prepared.
Tenders were called for and received for the construction of 1,000 lin. ft. of seawall at North Point westward from the end of the existing seawall at the Caltex oil installation on King's Road; the contract has not yet been awarded.
ROADS OFFICE
Repair and maintenance work is being carried in prac- tically every part of the Colony. In addition, such subsidiary work as widening roads, marking out of white lines, installa- tion of signs and removal of dangerous boulders, all designed to assist the traffic movement, has been done.
Work on tunnels still continues, portals of Sites Nos. 28, 29 and 34 in Hong Kong being resealed and Contracts Nos. 80 & 81 of 49 for work on Sites Nos. 3 and 10 being completed.
The quarries which are also under the jurisdiction of this Office are operating with production being maintained at a satisfactory level. Total valuations of 14 lots for lease renewals amounted to $2,563,606.00; 77 properties were valued at $6,877,826.00 for resumption purposes; & properties were valued at $103,864.00 for
193 exchanges; and
hereditaments were valued at $6,298,404.00 for the Estate Duty Commissioner. In addition, estimated valuation for Road Alignment and Town Planning of $2,620,000.00
submitted for resumption purposes.
Total valuations for Government property values, pur- chases by Government, Town Planning Schemes, etc., amounted to $4,960,300.00.

WATERWORKS OFFICE
Pumping stations operated satisfactorily during this quarter. The new valve chamber for No. 3 Engine at Tytam Tak was installed and the engine put in service. The stand-by Diesel installation at Aberdeen Upper Pumping Station was completed.
Fair progress was made on the construction of the new workshop at Argyle Street, Kowloon; concreting of the floors and walls were completed and the brick walling is well in hand.
Drilling work was completed at the Airport site and boring re-commenced at the site of the proposed service reservoir at Lai Chi Kok Hill. Boring work was also put in hand for Messrs. Spence, Robinson & Partners on the site of the new Alexandra Building.
