The change in angle of platforms as they follow the track contour is almost imper- ceptible. Passengers are always afforded a firm, stable footing. For additional safety, the are equipped with a single-action brak- ing system for smooth and gradual, yet quick stopping, under either light or heavy load. And there are other safety devices on every Trav-O-Lator that stop the strip immediately if anything should go wrong. These include a broken-chain safety device, a non-reversing mechanisın, controller overload relays, and a machine speed governor.

In the London installation, there will be a vertical rise of 42 feet, with an angle of slope of I in 7; the distance on the slope is almost 299 feet.

The two machines are fitted with 3- phase variable speed commutator motors of about 85 h.p.; the linear speed of the travel strips will be 180 feet per minute, giving each Trav-O-Lator 1 capacity of 16,000 passengers an hour. On these strips, two adults can ride side- by-side without touching elbows. A

somewhat smaller Trav-O-Lator is also available.

The travel strips in the Bank tunnel will be operated in the ascending direc- tion in the morning rush period and in the descending direction during the even- ing rush period. During the slack period one will operate in each direction.

In the past, a lot of comment has ap- peared in the local press concerning the New Star Ferry piers; much of this was directed at the long distance commuters have to walk on the Hong Kong side. Now with the construction of the subway under Connaught Road nearing completion, we have an ideal situation for the installation of two or three Trav- O-Lators. Such an innovation would do much to counter the adverse criticism directed at the new terminals by Star Ferry users. The question of cost would, of course, have to be investigated closely, but we feel that Government, and the franchise holder, would be failing in their duty to the public if they did not give this matter very careful considera- tion.
