HK tunnel contract confirmed?
FOLLOWING a series of press confirmations and denials last month concerning the revitalisation of Hong Kong's cross-harbour tunnel project, the chairman of the UK contractors, Costains Ltd., issued a statement in London saying: "We have reached general agreement for the building of the tunnel".
The chairman, Mr. D.C.J. Richards, went on to say that it was expected that the contract would be finalised when the financial arrangements had been made. A decision in this respect would be made "very soon".
In Hong Kong, Col. J.D. Claque, a principal of the tunnel company, said that the scheme now rested on approval of the UK Government of the necessary export credit guarantee finance in support of the con- tractor. Once this approval was given work could start within 60 days.
About HK$10 million has already been spent on the project, which is now estimated to cost HK$280 million. Main construction would take about three years.
Consultants for the tunnel, which will be con- structed by the submerged tube method, are the London firms, Scott Wilson, Kirkpatrick and Partners, and Freeman, Fox and Partners.

the traffic in and out of the Toa Payoh township. The 34 mile long, 65 ft. high system will connect Jalan Toa Payoh into the new town without interrupting the flow of traffic along Jalan Toa Payoh.
Traffic from Woodsville Circus in Upper Seran- goon Road will pass through the flyover to reach Toa Payoh new town, while vehicles from the new town will pass over it to go to Jalan Toa Payoh and Thomson Road. Slip roads will open out ways for traffic turning left from Jalan Toa Payoh into the new town and vice-versa.
The third flyover, costing $$3.5 million will be at the junction of Jalan Toa Payoh and Thomson Road. Carrying six traffic lanes with a central median of 4ft. and turning loops at either side, the structure will be built over Thomson Road, linking Jalan Toa Payoh and Whitley Road. Work on both schemes is expected to be completed within 18 months.
