PORT WORKS OFFICE

Repairs were carried out on Jubilee St., Jordan Rd., Mongkok and Shamshuipo Ferry Piers, as well as to the Public Piers at Tsim Sha Tsui, Blake Pier, Lighthouse Pier, Green Island. Repairs to seawalls at Hunghom, Yaumati and at the Kowloon-Canton Railway Station were also carried out.

Contracts were let for the reconstruction of King Shan and Marine Department Piers and for the Naval Camber at Kowloon.

The construction of a Tide Garage Station was commenced at Arsenal Yard. Dredging work was carried out at Causeway Bay, a total of 45,390 cu.yds. of spoil being removed.

The various reclamation schemes at Staunton Creek, Aberdeen, North Point, Kun Tong and Hung Hom are progress- ing favourably. The size and layout of piers for the projected Central Reclamation scheme was modified, but in the meantime marine boring work was completed.

At the Airport, the contract for the perimeter fence was satisfactorily completed, but the contract for the patching of the runways is very much behind schedule.

ROADS OFFICE

Maintenance work to roads in Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories proceeds apace. Amongst the work being done on the Island are the Mount Collinson and Cape d'Aguilar Roads. The reforming and resurfacing of Coombe Road at Wanchai Gap was completed and Aberdeen Road almost completely formed.

In the New Territories the principal work in hand is the Lam Tsuen Valley Road of which the 75'0" span reinforced concrete bridge, the 4′0′′ square culverts and the permanent bridge abutments for 2 Bailey Bridges were completed. The rehabilitation of Clearwater Bay Road, beyond the S.D.A. Mission, improvements to the Castle Peak Road at Tsun Wan Hill, So Kun Wat, Au Tan and other places, are also pro- gressing.

Repairs to the tunnels under Leighton Hill are progress- ing favourably and it can be considered that the work of filling Japanese tunnels on the Island is now nearing its end. On the mainland, however, this work is still proceeding, new tenders being called for during this period under review.

VALUATIONS AND RESUMPTIONS OFFICE

The following valuations were submitted during June and July:

$2,557,299.00

WATERWORKS

Rainfall for the two months was 28.10 inches against an average of 30.36 inches. Preparations were being made to repair the west cross harbour main. Work on the manufac- ture and laying of 15,000 feet of 24" concrete pipes for Bowen Road continued. The last 940 feet of 6" cement asbestos pipe between Shing Mun and Tsun Wan were laid in connection with the improvement to Tsun Wan Village supply, and 4,350 feet of 8" cement asbestos pipe was laid from Tytam Tuk to improve the Stanley supply.

15,241 feet of new distribution pipes were laid in the city areas and 486 feet of 18" cast iron piping to complete the Causeway Bay Road scheme.

Work on the construction of Eastern R.G. Filter and Pump House and the Wong Nei Chong Filters continue.

16,261 accounts for water consumption were issued as well as 1,118 demand notes for deposits to insure payment of water charges.
