AVERAGE CURRENT PRICES OF COMMON BUILDING MATERIALS.
For ease of comparison the Singapore prices given below are quoted in Hong Kong dollars, converted at the rate of Str.$1.00 to H.K.$2.00. They are, in nearly every case, the averages of several quotations. The balance of trade with Japan having gone against Hong Kong, there is a great shortage of Japanese trade dollars and Japanese cement is getting very scarce in Hong Kong, the price rising sharply in consequence. Japanese galvanized water pipe was just beginning to appear on the market at prices competitive with British prices but the supplies are now drying up.
