An extensive housing scheme, designed by Messrs. Swan & Maclaren, will rank amongst the largest private develop- ments carried out in Singapore by a firm to cope with its hous- ing and accommodation problems.
The first stage of development of this scheme is the erection of flats, servants' quarters and garages, followed by the individual bungalows.
The number of flats to be erected is twentyfour un four blocks. The accommodation comprises per unit-Lounge, Dining Room, two Bedrooms, tiled bathroom and cloakroom, with adequately built in cupboards. Two servant's rooms and garage accommodation are provided separately for each flat.
The elevations, as will be seen from the Architect's per- spective, are well proportioned and an added interest is given by the skilful use of wrought-iron.
The general specification is for an R.C. frame building with brick panel walls cement rendered externally. Architec- tural features are picked out in red facing bricks. The roof is of tiled and timber construction. The floors will be finished with mosaic tiling.
It is estimated that the flats and ancilliary buildings will cost approximately One Million Dollars. The General Con- tractors for the housing scheme are the Central Contractors Ltd.
The scheme, as illustrated in the plan on the left and the architects' perspective above, is an exceedingly interesting one, and we regret that better reproductions than those given on this page are not available.
