To provide for transient passengers on the Canton- Hankow Railway the block of houses known as 7, 8, 9 & 10 Middle Road, Kowloon, was recently acquired. The buildings as they stood were most uneconomical of space and entirely unsuitable for their new purpose. The architects for the con- version, Mr. G. W. Grey in conjunction with Mr. S. F. Lew, have recently completed a fine job of work in adapting these buildings to their new function, at the same time vastly improving the outward appearance of the block, which to-day presents a quite handsome exterior.
The site is unusually good, having not only an unrestricted outlook over an open grassy space (now unfortunately occupied as a military vehicle park), over Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong, but also it is within one hundred yards of Kowloon's main artery, Nathan Road, and only a few hundred yards from the Kowloon-Canton Railway terminus.

The architect's problem was to fit into the available ground area as much accommodation as possible of three different types. The plan of the third floor reproduced here is typical.
It shows four suites of combined bedroom and living room, approximately 28' X 14', with private bathroom, four similar but slightly smaller suites, eight bedrooms with shower and W.C. and seven bedrooms using public bathrooms. Meals are served in the rooms from the ground floor kitchen using locally made food lifts. It was planned that the hotel should be operated by the China Hotels and Realty Company, Limited, a Hong Kong registered company, but the building was requisitioned for the Military immediately it was completed.
