The building itself is ten stories high and costs about $400,000.00 to build. In external appearance it is one of the most attractively designed and finished buildings in the Colony. The facade to the first floor level is of fine-punched granite facing and is surmounted by a reinforced con- crete glass brick canopy. The whole of the external plastering above the first floor has been rendered with marble and quartzite chips which impart life and vividness to the or- dinarily dreary grey of cement.

The bay effect, which the architects have obtained by extending the front window line of the facade, rounded at both sides, and emphasised by two vertical pilastres extending the full height of the building to the set- back, imparts an air of originality and pleasantness to the design, which compares favourably with any build- ing recently erected in the Colony.

A recent view of Queen's Road, C., with the Loke Yew Building in startling contrast to its surroundings.

Rising out of a tangle of ancient decrepit tenement build- ings, like a shaft of light from out of the darkness, the Loke Yew Building seems to symbolize a promise of better things to come. Queen's Road, from Pedder Street westward, might be quaint enough to tourists, who, wandering through its twisted, congested, malodoriferous confines, are intrigued by the con- fusion of sight and raucity of sound which mark their pro- gress, but to citizens of the Colony who are not deceived by its superficial garishness, the disease-breeding, firetraps which line both sides of this thoroughfare are an eyesore and reproach. It is to be hoped that the erection of the Loke Yew Building will mark the beginning of a period of reconstruction along Queen's Road during which the unsightly and uneconomic tenements will gradually but surely be replaced by attractive buildings which will justify their existence on this important thoroughfare.
