(2) For Thornycroft Refuse Collection Vehicles of the end-loading type with box body we recommend A.R.P. equipment in the form of a galvanized tank of either 500 gallons or 750 gallons capacity, according to the size of the machine concerned. This tank, which

can be rolled into the body, is intended either for carry- ing drinking water to areas where the water mains have been damaged, or the tank can be employed as an auxiliary fire-fighting unit. The drive for the fire pump is by means of a chain and sprocket gear connected to an extension shaft from the power take-off on the chassis gear box, and this pump can be connected to suction hose to draw water from an outside source as well as to supply water under pressure for fire-fighting purposes.

It will be appreciated that this equpment can be supplied with new vehicles or it can equally well be supplied for refuse collection vehicles up to about 10 cubic yards capacity already in use.

(3) For fitting to any type of Thornycroft vehicle as an emergency fire-fighting outfit, we recommend the Eagle friction-drive equipment, which consists of a galvanized rectangular tank with lifting eyes on each side so that it can be quickly lifted in and out of any type of commercial body. The centrifugal pump in this case is mounted to the chassis frame and the drive is by friction off one of the rear wheel tyres. This drive con- sists of a small pulley which is engaged by means of a handle and screw and the drive shaft has a self-aligning ball bearing and a universal coupling on to the pump. When not in use, the drive shaft, by withdrawing one pin, can be swung round through the universal joint and attached to the chassis frame in a protected position.

#

The equipment provided in this case includes a 12′ 6′′ length of armoured delivery hose for filling the tank, two 50' lengths of canvas hose with coupling and 1⁄2" nozzle, and two 12' 6" lengths of armoured suction hose complete with couplings and strainer.

It will be appreciated that the feature of this equip- ment is that it can easily be fitted to existing vehicles and will not interfere with the general working of the vehicle when carrying goods under normal peace time conditions.

We claim that the equipment can be mounted and taken off in a matter of half an hour and, in addition to use by Municipal Authorities, the outfit is equally suitable for large manufacturing firms, who will un- doubtedly wish to equip some of their transport with an auxiliary fire-fighting appliance as a precaution against For further information apply
