SINGAPORE HOTEL-OFFICE-SH

DESIGN GETS AWAY FROM

'CONCRETE AND GLASS CLI

ARCHITECTS:— C. A.V. Chew and Partners

DETAILS of Ming Court, a large proposed private development on a site at the corner of Orchard Road and Tanglin Road, Singapore- a joint venture between two local property companies (Town and City Properties Ltd. and Central Proper- ties Ltd.) are particularly interest- ing as the project will incorporate a luxury hotel, a large, multi-floor shopping concourse and office ac- commodation, all inter-connected on the one site. This is the first time that this form of comprehensive de- velopment has been under- taken in Singapore.

In planning, the main problem of the architects, C.A.V. Chew and Partners, was that of fully integrating

the various facilities on the site the hotel, shopping floors, offices, restaurant, night club, coffee lounge, underground car park into one architectural whole, while at the same time providing easy separate access to the hotel. the shopping concourse and the office premises which are the three main elements of the develop-

ment.

This problem has been resolved by integrating the three main sections from first floor level to form one basic structure. Below and above these, both the hotel (the main 14- storey tower block) and the office and main shopping section (which is now to be about four storeys high instead of the height show on the drawing) emerge as separate entities.
