In this tall block, served by three high-speed passenger lifts, are housed the marriage registry, library (on five floors). lecture rooms. exhibi- tion hall. administrative and commit- tee rooms, and, on the top two floors. the museum and art gallery (lit by a full height north wall. which are linked by an independent stair case.
Entrance to the ballroom. ban- queting hall. concert hall and theatre is through the main foyer which, with its ancillary bars, also serves as a crush room for intervals in per- formances in the concert hall and theatre. Consequently it is large in area and its proportions are in keep- ing with the dignity of the whole complex and with its role as a social meeting place on these occasions.
Colours in the foyer are very restrained and include a large area of carpet designed by the architects and made in the Colony. From here the carpeted area continues through- out the circulation area at all levels, giving it special emphasis and also providing a sound absorbent area.
