Singapore's Traffic

To relieve the appalling congestion on Kallang Road, Merdeka Bridge and Nicoll Highway were opened in August 1956. The Bridge consists of 25 spans. each of 80 feet. totalling 2.000 lin. feet. Initial width is 65 feet with foundations of 15 feet on each side. There are also two traffic passing-bays on each side of the Bridge with a total initial width of 85 feet. Thus vehicle breakdowns do not interfere with the flow of traffic. The culmination of long planning. brilliant designing and painstaking execution has resulted in a graceful structure that has no
