NEW METHOD DEVISED TO DRESS FLOORS By A. M. Scott, F. E. Representative, Sissons Brothers & Co., Ltd.
Floors present special problems in terms of treatment since they must carry the entire weight of traffic and accumulate the major proportion of dirt. Nevertheless modern practice demands the same high standard of finish on floors as on less vulnerable surfaces. and years of intensive re- search have been carried out to this end.
In this research full advantage has been taken of recent scientific de- velopments in silicones and resins including the new epoxy resins. The result is a new dressing called Sis- sons Floor Dressing. It provides an exceptionally attractive floor surface with excellent qualities of wear.
It is pale in colour with none of the yellowness of old-fashioned finishes. and dries with a tough hard gloss which is at the same time scuff-resis. tant.
In spite of the high gloss of finish- ed surfaces, floors treated with this dressing are definitely non-slip-a very considerable advantage.
No special safety precautions are necessary when using the dressing and there is a complete absence of objectionable smell both during and after application. It is safe to use and store. There is no greater risk of flammability than with ordinary paints and varnishes.
The dressing can be speedily and easily applied by unskilled labour and even the largest surfaces present
no problem. It can be applied satis- factorily either by brush or Sissons applicator. The latter is preferable when large areas are to be treated as it more than halves application time. The free-flowing nature of this dressing allows one square yard per minute to be covered with ease. It dries quickly. becomes dust-free in a matter of six hours and hard enough to take traffic after leaving to dry overnight. During the first six hours after application, movement in the area should be kept to a minimum in order to prevent as far as possible, dust which would settle on the floor.
The dressing gives a beautiful. hard-wearing surface that is very easy to keep clean. There are
im. mediate savings in cleaning and maintenance costs as floors can be kept clean by normal brushing and periodical washing. They will retain their gloss when washed with deter- gents and are completely unaffected by petrol, water, grease and oil and many other solutions used in manu- facturing or other businesses.
Hitherto it has been difficult to treat satisfactorily floors which have been heavily waxed; Sissons Barrier Seal, which should be applied only after all wax possible has been re- moved by physical means, has been introduced as a pre-coat for the special dressing and provides an extra precaution against non-drying or hardening because of residual

The dressing can be used on old as well as new floors but it is recom- mended that appropriate steps taken to deal with oil, dirt, wax polish, grease and the like before ap plication, since they can delay_dry- ing considerably. On old wood floors that have been waxed, mechanical sanding is preferable but it is not essential if the special barrier seal is used.
It is recommended that all floors be given a final vacuum clean to re- move dust before work is com. menced.
For new wood and parquet floors two coats of the dressing should nor- mally be used, but if there is mark- ed sinkage, three coats may be neces
Wherever a second or third sary. coat is applied it is an advantage to allow the previous coat eight hours to dry; this permits making over the floor in applying the subsequent coat When work is completed the total area covered should always be left overnight before opening to traffic.
The appearance of linoleum and lino tiles can be vastly improved and their life considerably extended by treatment with this type of dressing.
The dressing is an excellent anti- dusting medium for concrete but

applied after thorough cleansing of the floor sur- face. It is alkali-resisting and may be applied to new concrete providing this is reasonably dry.
