WITH the completion of the new Canossa Hospital at the corner of Robinson Road and Peak Road. Mr. A. V. Alvares has, at long last, realised one of the cherished hopes of the Canossian Daughters of Charity (Italy), whose Mission was established in Hongkong exactly a century ago.

This new building is a far cry from the first nursing home which was converted from two old build- ings bequeathed to the Canossian Sisters in 1929 by the late Mr. J.M. Stevens, a philanthropist of the old Hongkong days. Its magnificence is enhanced by its setting on a site of 80,000 square feet overlooking the Botanic Gardens, and the entire harbour and Kowloon hills.

Were it not for the fact that a considerable portion of the north- eastern corner was surrendered to the Government to assist in the widening of that part of Robinson Road to alleviate an urgent traffic problem, greater flexibility would have been afforded in the siting of this block.

As it is, the building had to be set farther back, practically up against the cutting of its southern boundary; and towards its western limits a cer- tain amount of cutting away and excavation work had to be done to form the basement from which the
