in employment prospects for Technical College students.

"Whereas four or five years ago it was sometimes difficult for them to find em- ployment, today the demand for these young men exceeds the supply and an increasing number of employers recruit only from those trained at the Technical College. As regards the part-time students, almost all of these are already in employ. ment.

"In addition, Hong Kong Technical College students are now to be found in many parts of the world, such as Australia,

the Japan, Malaya, Singapore,

United States, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

"A number of other important develop- ments which have occurred in the last four or five years are also deserving of mention. Firstly, there was the institution in Oc- tober last year of a part-time day-release class for engineering apprentices in Gov- ernment workshops, the first of its kind in the Colony.

"Secondly, the College has opened this session a number of engineering and build- ing classes taught in the medium of Chi- nese, so that technical education is provid- ed for those who are not able to master the knowledge of English required for the certificate and diploma courses of the College.

while.

"Another important development is the increased Use of external examinations such as those of the City and Guilds of London Institute, for which there is а record number of goo entries in 1956. Stu- dents of the College gain one or two medals of the City and Guilds of London Institute every year, which shows that the acade- mic level of the College is equal to that of other similar colleges in the Common- wealth.

"This, then, is something of the work of the Technical College and it has great- ly outgrown its building in Wanchai. Al- most no room remains for the expansion of full-time courses. As regards evening classes, some twelve other schools or co- leges throughout the Colony are used five evenings a week to provide for the large part-time enrolment.

"The need for a modern and large build- ing has become urgent, and this fact was referred to by Dr. the Hon. S. N. Chau in his budget speech last year, when he ap- pealed to the leaders of industry to co- operate with the Government in the con- struction of a new College.
