The appearance of the Jesselton water-front is rapidly changing as a result of new commercial construc- tion. In a prominent position the new premises of the Company and of Borneo Motors Limited, which were opened by Lady Hone in August 1953. In October. the 4-storey Chartered Bank Build- ing was opened by Major-General Sir Herbert Ralph Hone, KCMG, KBE, MC, TD, who was then Gover- nor of the Colony.

His Excellency the Governor, Mr. R. E. Turnbull, CMG, opened the new building for The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in May of this year. The building, which is the largest yet completed in Jesselton, is situated in a pro- minent position on the main road between the Jetty and the Town and is four storeys in height. The site is surrounded by public roads on all sides; it is approximately 13,000 square feet in area.

On entering the building, there is an immediate feeling of spaciousness due to the height of the banking hall which rises through two floors with a balcony on all sides. The well- proportioned columns rise to the full height and support a most effective coffered ceiling.
