ROAD
The block plan which illustrates the arrangement of the building around a central court providing light and air from all sides. Note the dotted lines to the right of the new building which outline existing tenement buildings and compare the amount of ventilation provided by each type of structure.
Improved ventilation is obtained by air ducts running vertically through the dormitories to the roof where patent ventilators and extract fans are situated.
The bunks will be constructed in tubular steel or galvanized iron, with "Masonite hardboard" bed boards. This latter material is an exceptionally hard building board which can be washed, or soaked without detriment, and which has a hard smooth surface with no graining or holes in which bugs can breed. Each bunk will have a small metal lockup cabinet for the tenant's belongings. On each floor adjacent to the dormitories are two self contained flats for the foremen and their families in charge of each gang. These flats are so laid out that there are
no internal cubicles as normally found in Chinese houses, each room having its own window.
Sanitary accommodation is provided on each floor by a group of native closets, which being all grouped in one place are more easily inspected and kept clean.
Vertical access throughout the building is afforded by three staircases which open on to balconies at each floor, and from which access to all dormitories, flats and sanitary rooms is obtained. These staircases open on to the roof of the building which is set aside as recreation space, half covered and half open.
Consideration has been given in the design of the building to the necessity for protection for the inmates during air raids the first floor R.C. slab is designed to carry the weight of the superstructure should it collapse, while special air raid lighting equipment will be installed throughout.
