ANTI-AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS IN CANTON

These photographs illustrate the bamboo matting screens which were erected on the roofs of a number of buildings in Canton, with the object of exploding falling bombs and deflecting the force of the explosion upwards.

The effectiveness of this precaution has never been proven as there is no record of buildings so protected having been hit. Their effectiveness against high explosive bombs is extremely doubtful while their inflammability would probably have made them worse than useless against incendiary bombs.
