NEW POWER STATION

FOR THE

CHINA LIGHT & POWER CO. LTD.

Owing to the increase in the load on the old Station, it became necessary to purchase new plant. It was ori- ginally intended to house this in the existing building but after consideration it was decided to place the new machinery in entirely new buildings, which would then provide for future extensions without any more rear- rangement. The new buildings have, therefore, been designed to accommodate plant totalling about 60,000 kilowatts capacity. Of this plant only 12,500 kilowatts have been installed up to the present.

In laying out the building it was kept in mind that when these buildings were fully equipped it should be possible to reconstruct the existing old Station on modern lines without interfering with the present extension.

The new buildings consist of a Boiler Room, a Turbine Room, Switch House and Offices in which the

Control Room is located, as well as subsidiary structures housing feed pumps, reserve water tanks and circulating water screens, with a special coal weighing and mixing house detached from the main building. The main buildings are constructed with a structural steel frame-

work encased in reinforced concrete walls and with steel

and concrete floors. They were designed to withstand typhoon pressures which, owing to the extremely exposed site, were taken at 60 lbs. per square foot.

The general design of the building has followed the latest practice in power station design, and does not present any unusual features, except for the construction of the 6,000-volt Switch House where special precautions were taken to minimise damage which might be caused by explosion or fire.
