GOVERNMENT FLATS AT
QUEEN'S GARDENS
With the completion of Queen's Gardens Flats, there remains only the buildings now in course of erection at King's Park to complete the Government programme of residential construction of the design of which Leighton Hill Flats were the prototype. The Leighton Hill Flats comprised two identical buildings separated from each other by a large courtyard. The Peak Pavilions consisted of a single unit set in its own grounds, The Queen's Garden project is two units combined together in one long block placed in a straight line facing the Harbour. As at Leighton Hill 26 self-contained apartments have been provided with accommodation similar in all respects to the lormer.
Situated on May Road on an area which formerly con- tained single block of residences, considerable amount of site formation work was necessary, not the least difficult part of which was the complete re-alignment of the May Road and Peak Road junction.
The experience gained by the Architectural Office in the erection of the Leighton Hill Flats and the Peak Pavilious enabled them to set the general contractors a building schedule which cut down the time of construction to eleven months, the lenders having been approved in June 1948, work started in July, and the buildings completed ready for occupation by the end of May 1949.
The Ceneral Contractors were Cheong Hing & Company, who carried out their work in a very able and efficient manner and were ahead of the schedule set them throughout the job.
Lifts were supplied and installed by the Otis Elevator Company; fireplaces of travertine marble by Vannini Construc- tion Co., Ltd.; terrazzo work by the general contractors; and the electrical installation by the Electrical Office, P.W.D.
