Epikote

seals 160 miles of tiles on the Sydney Opera House

And wins rousing bravos for an excellent performance.

The "sails" of the new Sydney Opera House were covered with thousands of ceramic tiles attached to specially designed tile lids.

The tiles demanded grouting with an epoxy resin compound and the tile lids themselves required scaling against water vapour to ensure proper and continued adhesion under ex- posed conditions.

Ove Arup and Partners, Super- vising structural engineers working

together with M. R. Hornibrook, contractors, sought the assistance of Shell Chemical, and a specially formulated Epikote grout was devel- oped for the job which gave greatly reduced water permeability com- pared to conventional tile grouting materials. It also provided a vastly superior life expectancy.

Epikote based tile grouts find ideal employment in many other locations. For instance, hospitals, where they provide a perfect non-porous surface that won't harbour germs.

Further uses for Epikote resin formulations include concrete-to- concrete bonding, concrete repair, crack filling, wall cladding, etc.
