in position by a Guy derrick which was located between the two girders. Temporary trestling for support was provided until the assembly, by high- strength friction-grip bolts, was com- pleted.

two

The whole operation of erecting the girders, including temporary trestling, took 17 days. The two gir- ders are believed to be the biggest of their type in South East Asia.

Finishes

Externally, bronze anodized al- uminium frames and bright alumin- ium ventilator windows combine with the undulating grey local granite spandrels to produce a striking effect to the tower facade which contrasts with the smoothness of the bank podium. A rich screen wall encloses the cooling tower and lift machine rooms at roof level and acts as a stop to the building.

Internally, plate glass, stainless steel, aluminium and marble are used extensively throughout the building. The marble was imported from sever- al countries. White Cararra from Italy covers the banking hall floor, side walls and counters. Jade onyx from Pakistan (polished in Italy) covers the rear wall, while yellow onyx from Turkey is the medium for a mural which covers the entire wall facing the entrance to the bank.

Contractors

Paul Y Construction Co. Ltd. was the main contractor and granite sup- plier. Sub-structure construction and steelwork erection was carried out by Gammon (H.K.) Ltd.
