There is a small but unusually designed house just being completed on Middle Gap Road, which has been built on a very limited, steep, difficult site. The area is a long narrow one, sloping sharply down from the road level, and set the architect a very pretty problem as to how to utilize the site without incurring the cost of expensive retaining walls. Mr. Hugh Braga, who is the architect, overcame the difficulty by dispensing with the retaining walls almost entirely and using reinforced concrete columns to carry the main walls of the building. An examination of the design, which included the additional difficulty of curving the front wall to follow the line of the road at this point, shows how efficiently the restricted area has been utilized.

The total cost of the construction was an extremely reasonable one and reflects considerable credit on Mr. Braga's engineering ability, as the reinforced concrete which is a considerable portion of the whole job must have been very economically designed. As will be seen from the plans a large covered verandah was incorporated between the angle formed by the sitting room and dining room, making the total living area a considerable proportion of the ground floor. Garage, servants' quarters, the laundry and the drying rooms have all been cleverly fitted into the design. Three bedrooms with large open verandah accessible from two of them, and two bathrooms are included in the upper floor.
