It is a welcome occasion when we have the opportunity of illustrating a project from the office of Mr. A. R. F. Raven. We have not had many opportunities to illustrate the works of this well-known architect in Hong Kong, not because of any dearth of work in his office, but because excessive modesty on his part has made it difficult for us to get the necessary information.

The building illustrated on this page is designed either to In be used as a two-flat house or as one large residence. actual fact, the building is to be occupied by the families of the owner, Mr. Wu Man Hon, and his son. It is situated on Sing Woo Road on an area of ground near to its junction with Blue Pool Road, where Government had sold a number of sites by private treaty. It will be recalled that for a short period, in order to encourage residential construction, Govern- ment disposed of a number of sites at especially low prices with a 20-year restrictive clause that buildings erected thereon would not be sold without consent of the Governor-in-Council, The actual sales price of the lot was $10.00 per square foot. A number of buildings have already been completed in this district. Construction work on other buildings is still proceed- ing apace.

The building is designed on very modern lines with full length terrace to the ground floor and verandah to the first floor, forming an architectural framing that provides a very modernistic touch to the front elevation.

The treatment of the round full length windows to the staircase, which projects from the main line of the building, gives the feeling of additional height to the two-storey struc- ture whilst adding some interesting linear effects to the other- wise severe exterior.

The plan of the building provides for three bedrooms with two bathrooms. The living room and dining room, though of moderate proportions, are placed adjacent to each other so as to increase the overall dimensions.

The general contractors are Messrs. Shun Lee Construc- tion Co.
