Three views of the living room. Left) Looking across the room towards the fireplace, lower left; facing the dining room entrance and lower right) looking towards the entrance hall.

Upstairs, in addition to the master bedroom with its own beautifully arranged bathroom and separate dressing there are two bedrooms with a bathroom for each, and a large drying room. Every bedroom has access to open terraces.

room,

Undoubtedly the outstanding feature of the building is the fact that built-in fixtures and recessed alcoves have been provided in practically every room. The dining room has built-in sideboard and linen closet. The study has built-in drawing table and shelves; each bedroom has built-in cupboards and dressing tables, and the hall its own cupboard. The treatment of the fireplace and the alcoves for desk and cabinet in the drawing room are note- worthy. All these features have been beautifully wrought in finest of woodwork and indirectly lighted to enhance the effects.

The walls of the building have been constructed of random ashlar granite blocks, the exterior surfaces of which have been very carefully pointed and left in their natural finish. The wide variety of colours found in the local granite, which includes practically every shade from a very light grey to a warm brown, shows up to particularly fine advantage in Mr. Faber's house and, with the contrast provided by the smooth finish of the concrete canopies and the texture of the roof tiles, provides an overall effect far

superior to that resulting from the stereotyped cement rendered walls usually found in Ilongkong.

The site of the building is a magnificent one, situated on an elevated spur overlooking Wong Nei Chong Valley to the north and Deepwater Bay to the south, from which extensive panoramic view of both sides of the island is obtained.

The advantages of the site brought its own site forma- tion difficulties. Normally, a small isolated site such as this would require considerable cutting and retaining wall

work. However, no attempt was made to provide extensive levelled lawn areas by means of unsightly cuttings and massive retaining walls. Instead, the garden area was terraced to conform with the natural contours, only enough dry rubble stonework being used to form these terraces, The result is that, while there is ample lawn area for the house itself, the entire garden has been landscaped to provide a natural setting for the building, helping to blend it into its impressive surroundings yet emphasizing its in- dividual entity.
