A third cinema was added to the growing North Point district with the official opening of the Metropole Theatre in King's Road, opposite the tram terminus. The ten-storey building, erected at a cost of $2,000,- 000, contains a restaurant on the first floor, with apartments on all the upper floors. The cinema has a seating capacity of 960. 2nd February 1954

A scheme was announced by the International Economic Development Co. (H.K.), Ltd.. for the construction of 600 flats in 15 buildings of five storeys each. The site for the pro- ject is the land between Lai Chi Kok Road and Prince Edward Road at Tai Kok Tsui, and it is intended that the accommodation will be for white- collar workers.

It was learned that the Wing On Life Assurance Co. Ltd., plan to re- place the present Majestic Building at 24 Des Voeux Road, Central, by a modern 14-storey building at a cost of about $2,400,000, excluding the value of the land, which is worth about one million dollars. 23rd February 1954

The Rev. Sterling H. Whitener, Secretary of the Hongkong Advisory Committee of the Church World Ser- vice. stated that the American organisation has donated a total of US$22,000 towards the relief of the Shumshuipo fire victims. The money will be used to build 80 concrete housing units, similar to those al- ready erected by the organisation at Homuntin.
