AUSTRALIAN BUILDING

MISSION A SUCCESS

XCELLENT sales results were achieved by the recent Austra- lian Building Materials Mission to South East Asia, the leader of the Mission, Mr. Henry Wilckens, claimed this month.

Mr. Wilckens, managing director of Wilckens and Burnside of Adelaide, one of the country's top builders, said that during the three weeks' visit to Manila, Hong Kong and Bangkok. the Mission had ob- tained orders for more than HK $3 million worth of building materials.

He anticipated that follow-up orders this year would be worth another HK $14 million last year's sales.

Mr. Wilckens said that much of the success of the fast developing

Australian building materials indus- try was due to its engineers and scientists.

Their contributions included the development of ready-mixed concrete techniques, since adopted in Hong Kong by an Australian-managed company, and the development of pre-stressed and pre-cast concrete, he said, adding that an Australian firm was the world's largest producer of these two types of concrete.

"The quality of all the products of the Australian building materials industry for both the export and domestic markets, is safeguarded by major research organisations such as the Australian Commonwealth Experi- mental Research Organisation and the Australian Commonwealth Scienti-

fic and Industrial Research Organisa. tion's building research division. The products conform to Australian. British and American standards of quality and performance," Mr. Wilckens said.

The gross value of production of building materials in Australia has now reached about HK$6,000 mil lion a year. The principal items are steel, aluminium, timber, concrete, hardware, window fittings, tools, plumbing, plywood and hardwood, hardboard, electrical fit- tings, paints, lacquers. varnishes. insulating and reinforcing materials.

veneers.

The manager of the Mission. Mr. L. G. Freeman, summed up the rea- son for the Mission's visit by saying that there was a growing awareness by Australians that geographically and economically their country was part of South East Asia and need to expand its markets in this area.

Members of the architectural pro- fession in Hong Kong said that the Mission had impressed upon them that Australian building materials were competitive.
